Sorrow is the Gateway to Your Joy

Ever so often when things go wrong in our lives, we blame it on all the external factors of our lives, and sometimes on other people. We slip into the culture of finger pointing and get into the circle of blames. Yet many know that nothing is a coincidence in life, and that everything that is happening to us is meant for us, even the bad ones.

But has it occurred to you that it is especially the bad experiences that are so meant for us, that contain the substance or ingredients needed to propel us into the direction and life we are meant for – which shall lead us towards peace and bliss, and sometimes greatness too?

Apparently, it is just that! This is exactly how it was meant to work. Through sorrow comes strength and joy. This is by design. Swami Vivekananda called those who experience extreme sorrow, “fortunate”, because these are the ones who have been selected for freedom and joy.

Think yourself as the revered lotus flower. The beautiful lotus flower emerges gloriously from the mucky black soil of the pond. It does not struggle or suffer to flourish. It is not affected by its unsightly surroundings or neighbours that it was born in, to remain beautiful. The mucky soil or the pollution of others does not contaminate it; the lotus remains glorious and beautiful on its own.

This is why the lotus flower is very significant in Hindu and Buddhist worship. It is used as the main example to illustrate to man that when he finds himself in muck, he too can rise gloriously above it.

“Overcome your uncertainties and free yourself from dwelling on sorrow. When you delight in existence, you will awaken, and become a guide to those in need, revealing the path to many.” – Gautama Buddha
